I turned to walk straight back to the house but decided to take a scenic route and walk the long way through the gardens. I glanced over at the house, which was bathed in darkness, and the gardens had the beginnings of fog. The whole thing seemed surreal. Like a dream, even though I was wide awake and completely alone. I sent a text to Emily. “You're crazy! Thank you.”

It was hard to agree but I promised myself I wouldn’t squander it. I walked around the back of the house with a spring in my step, feeling rich in more ways than one. I went back into the study to the scene of the crime and put everything that had been moved back in its place.
